Aksum’s ruler adopts Christianity
4th century CE
The Aksumite ruler Ezana adopted Christianity during the fourth century. Trade routes linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean helped connect his kingdom with Christian communities. Coins carrying the cross provide material evidence of the new royal affiliation and its public expression.
