Sanchi develops as a Buddhist sacred center

c. 3rd–1st centuries BCE

Sanchi’s sacred monuments began under Ashoka and expanded under later patrons. Stupas, pathways, railings, and eventually elaborate gateways shaped pilgrimage around relics and Buddhist stories. The surviving complex records repeated building and worship, rather than a sanctuary completed in one moment.

Why it matters

Architecture offers evidence of Buddhist communal practice where manuscripts alone cannot show how people gathered, honored relics, and encountered religious narratives.
