A national Daoist association is established
1957 CE
Daoist representatives established the Chinese Daoist Association in Beijing. The new national organization brought religious leadership into an officially recognized structure under the People’s Republic. Its stated responsibilities included supporting Daoist learning, protecting religious heritage, and working within the state’s religious policy framework.
Why it matters
The institution represents a modern reorganization of religious public life, rather than an ancient centralized authority shared by every Daoist community.
