Zhuangzi opens new philosophical possibilities
c. late 4th century BCE
Zhuangzi became associated with stories and arguments that question fixed judgments, conventional ambitions, and the limits of language. The collection bearing his name includes contributions from other writers. Its imaginative dialogues became a major resource for later philosophical and religious reflection.
Why it matters
The presence of more than one early voice prevents Daoist history from being reduced to the Daodejing or to a single founding author.
