Excommunications deepen the East–West estrangement

1054 CE

Roman legates and leaders in Constantinople exchanged sentences of excommunication. The censures targeted individuals, yet became symbols of a widening rupture between Latin and Greek Christian worlds. Later Catholic and Orthodox leaders acknowledged that their consequences exceeded what the original participants had intended.
