Muhammad’s death raises the question of succession
632 CE
After Muhammad’s death, Abu Bakr became the first caliph, taking responsibility for political leadership of the community. The question of authority after the Prophet remained consequential. Later Sunni and Shi‘i traditions developed different accounts of rightful leadership and its relationship to Muhammad’s family.
