Rammohun Roy publishes Upanishadic translations
1816 CE
Rammohun Roy published translations of Upanishadic teachings in Bengali and English, including the Kena and Isha. Translation formed part of his wider engagement with religious discussion and reform. Indian interpreters themselves shaped how these Sanskrit texts entered new public debates.
Why it matters
This milestone connects the reading collection to Indian intellectual agency in translation, rather than presenting modern transmission as an exclusively European undertaking.
