Upanishadic teachers explore self and reality

c. 900–300 BCE

Teachers associated with different Vedic schools explored the self, ultimate reality, sacrifice, and renunciation. The Upanishads preserve these inquiries in varied literary forms. Their composition extended over centuries, and later philosophers developed contrasting interpretations of their teachings rather than one uniform system.

Why it matters

These teacher–student traditions give historical context to the Isha, Kena, and Katha Upanishads without claiming that their individual composition dates are certain.
