The King James Bible appears in English

1611 CE

A collaborative revision of the English Bible was published in London under James I’s patronage. Its translators worked within inherited English translation traditions. Printing privileges and church use helped the version become prominent, though its first appearance did not immediately eliminate competing English Bibles.

Why it matters

The edition illustrates how translation, royal sponsorship, printing, and worship together shape which wording becomes familiar to generations of readers in a language.
