The Gospel of Mark takes written form

c. 70 CE

The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus’ ministry and death in a sustained narrative shaped by suffering and expectations of vindication. Scholars commonly place it near the Jewish–Roman war, though they disagree about its exact date and location. Later Gospel writers drew on its narrative.

Why it matters

Mark introduces the difference between the events narrated in a Gospel and the later historical setting in which its author addressed readers.
