The Council of Nicaea formulates a creed
325 CE
Constantine convened bishops at Nicaea in an effort to resolve disputes and strengthen unity. The council condemned Arian teaching and formulated a creed. Debates about the Son’s relation to the Father continued afterward, so the gathering was a major intervention within a longer theological struggle.
Why it matters
The council helps readers see how Christian doctrines were debated and formally expressed through institutions rather than appearing as a finished system at once.
About the date
Date of the council, not the end of theological disagreement.
