Timbuktu flourishes as a center of Islamic learning
15th–16th centuries CE
Timbuktu’s mosques and schools made it an influential intellectual and spiritual center in West Africa. Scholars and students participated in learning networks linked to the wider Muslim world. Sankore and the city’s other institutions preserve the memory of this sustained period of religious education.
Why it matters
Timbuktu expands the geography of Qur’anic learning and helps counter the assumption that Africa stood outside the principal networks of Islamic scholarship.
About the date
Broad period of intellectual prominence, not the founding date of every school.
Timbuktu
