The Council of Trent defines Catholic reforms
1545–1563 CE
Catholic leaders met at Trent in several phases to address doctrinal disputes and reform church life. Their decisions clarified positions contested by Protestant reformers and established programs of internal renewal. The council helped shape Catholic teaching and institutions for subsequent centuries.
Why it matters
Trent helps explain why the Reformation involved both new Protestant communities and extensive changes within Catholicism, with different answers to shared religious questions.
