iti24:0.1So It Was Said 24

iti24:0.2The Book of the Ones

iti24:0.3Chapter Three

iti24:0.4A Heap of Bones

iti24:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti24:2.1“Mendicants, one individual roaming and transmigrating for an eon would amass a heap of bones the size of this Mount Vepulla, if they were gathered together and not lost.”

iti24:2.2The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti24:2.3On this it is said:

iti24:3.1“If the bones of a single individual

iti24:3.2for a single eon were gathered up,

iti24:3.3they’d make a pile the size of a mountain:

iti24:3.4so said the great seer.

iti24:4.1And this is declared to be

iti24:4.2as big as Mount Vepulla,

iti24:4.3higher than the Vulture’s Peak

iti24:4.4in the Mountainfold of the Magadhans.

iti24:5.1But then, with right understanding,

iti24:5.2one sees the noble truths—

iti24:5.3suffering, suffering’s origin,

iti24:5.4suffering’s transcendence,

iti24:5.5and the noble eightfold path

iti24:5.6that leads to the stilling of suffering.

iti24:6.1After roaming on seven times at most,

iti24:6.2that individual

iti24:6.3makes an end of suffering,

iti24:6.4with the ending of all fetters.”

iti24:7.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
