iti26:0.1So It Was Said 26

iti26:0.2The Book of the Ones

iti26:0.3Chapter Three

iti26:0.4Giving

iti26:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti26:2.1“Mendicants, if sentient beings only knew, as I do, the fruit of giving and sharing, they would not eat without first giving, and the stain of stinginess would not occupy their minds.

iti26:2.2They would not eat without sharing even their last mouthful, their last morsel, so long as there was someone to receive it.

iti26:2.3It is because sentient beings do not know, as I do, the fruit of giving and sharing, that they eat without first giving, and the stain of stinginess occupies their minds.”

iti26:2.4The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti26:2.5On this it is said:

iti26:3.1“If sentient beings only knew

iti26:3.2how great is the fruit

iti26:3.3of giving and sharing

iti26:3.4as taught by the great seer!

iti26:4.1Rid of the stain of stinginess,

iti26:4.2with clear and confident heart,

iti26:4.3they would duly give to the noble ones,

iti26:4.4where a gift is very fruitful.

iti26:5.1Having given food in abundance

iti26:5.2to those worthy of a religious donation,

iti26:5.3after passing from the human realm,

iti26:5.4the givers go to heaven.

iti26:6.1And when they have arrived there in heaven,

iti26:6.2they enjoy all the pleasures they desire.

iti26:6.3The generous enjoy the

iti26:6.4fruit of giving and sharing.”

iti26:7.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
