iti75:0.1So It Was Said 75

iti75:0.2The Book of the Threes

iti75:0.3Chapter Three

iti75:0.4A Rainless Cloud

iti75:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti75:2.1“Mendicants, these three individuals are found in the world.

iti75:2.2What three?

iti75:2.3One like a rainless cloud, one who rains locally, one who rains all over.

iti75:3.1And how is an individual like a rainless cloud?

iti75:3.2It’s when an individual doesn’t give to anyone at all—whether ascetics and brahmins, paupers, vagrants, supplicants, or beggars—such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

iti75:3.3That’s how an individual is like a rainless cloud.

iti75:4.1And how does an individual rain locally?

iti75:4.2It’s when an individual gives to some but not to others—whether ascetics and brahmins, paupers, vagrants, supplicants, or beggars—such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

iti75:4.3That’s how an individual rains locally.

iti75:5.1And how does an individual rain all over?

iti75:5.2It’s when an individual gives to everyone—whether ascetics and brahmins, paupers, vagrants, supplicants, or beggars—such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.

iti75:5.3That’s how an individual rains all over.

iti75:5.4These are the three individuals found in the world.”

iti75:5.5The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti75:5.6On this it is said:

iti75:6.1“They don’t share the food and drink

iti75:6.2they have acquired

iti75:6.3with ascetics or brahmins,

iti75:6.4with paupers, vagrants, or supplicants.

iti75:6.5They’re like a rainless cloud,

iti75:6.6they say, the meanest of men.

iti75:7.1They don’t give to some,

iti75:7.2to some they provide.

iti75:7.3They rain locally,

iti75:7.4so say the wise.

iti75:8.1Compassionate for all beings,

iti75:8.2that person distributes

iti75:8.3abundant food upon request,

iti75:8.4saying, ‘Give! Give!’

iti75:9.1The rain cloud rains forth,

iti75:9.2having thundered and roared,

iti75:9.3drenching the earth with water,

iti75:9.4soaking the uplands and valleys.

iti75:10.1Even so, such an individual,

iti75:10.2having accumulated wealth

iti75:10.3by legitimate means,

iti75:10.4through their own hard work,

iti75:10.5rightly satisfies with food and drink

iti75:10.6those who have become supplicants.”

iti75:11.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
