iti81:0.1So It Was Said 81

iti81:0.2The Book of the Threes

iti81:0.3Chapter Four

iti81:0.4Esteem

iti81:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti81:2.1“I’ve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

iti81:3.1I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

iti81:4.1I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

iti81:5.1Now, I don’t say this because I’ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.

iti81:5.2I only say it because I’ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.”

iti81:8.2The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti81:8.3On this it is said:

iti81:9.1“Whether they’re honored

iti81:9.2or not honored, or both,

iti81:9.3their immersion doesn’t waver

iti81:9.4as they abide in the immeasurables.

iti81:10.1They persistently practice absorption

iti81:10.2with subtle view and discernment.

iti81:10.3Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,

iti81:10.4they’re said to be a true person.”

iti81:11.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
