iti98:0.2The Book of the Threes

iti98:0.3Chapter Five

iti98:0.4Giving

iti98:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti98:2.1“There are, mendicants, these two gifts.

iti98:2.2A gift of things of the flesh and a gift of the teaching.

iti98:2.3The better of these two gifts is the gift of the teaching.

iti98:3.1There are these two kinds of sharing.

iti98:3.2Sharing things of the flesh and sharing the teaching.

iti98:3.3The better of these two kinds of sharing is sharing the teaching.

iti98:4.1There are these two kinds of support.

iti98:4.2Support in things of the flesh and support in the teaching.

iti98:4.3The better of these two kinds of support is support in the teaching.”

iti98:4.4The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti98:4.5On this it is said:

iti98:5.1“It is said to be the supreme, ultimate gift,

iti98:5.2and the sharing praised by the Buddha;

iti98:5.3what wise and sensible person, confident in the best of fields,

iti98:5.4would not sow a such timely gift?

iti98:6.1For those who are diligent in the dispensation of the Holy One,

iti98:6.2both those who speak and those who listen,

iti98:6.3confident in the dispensation of the Holy One,

iti98:6.4such a gift purifies the highest goal.”

iti98:7.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
