ud1.1:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 1.1
ud1.1:0.2Upon Awakening (1st)
ud1.1:1.1So I have heard.
ud1.1:1.2At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the root of the tree of awakening on the bank of the Nerañjarā River.
ud1.1:1.3There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom.
ud1.1:1.4When seven days had passed, the Buddha emerged from that state of immersion. In the first part of the night, he carefully applied the mind to dependent origination, going with the grain:
ud1.1:2.1“So, when this exists, this comes to be; due to the arising of this, this arises. That is:
ud1.1:2.2Ignorance is a requirement for choices.
ud1.1:2.3Choices are a requirement for consciousness.
ud1.1:2.4Consciousness is a requirement for name and form.
ud1.1:2.5Name and form are requirements for the six sense fields.
ud1.1:2.6The six sense fields are requirements for contact.
ud1.1:2.7Contact is a requirement for feeling.
ud1.1:2.8Feeling is a requirement for craving.
ud1.1:2.9Craving is a requirement for grasping.
ud1.1:2.10Grasping is a requirement for continued existence.
ud1.1:2.11Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth.
ud1.1:2.12Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.
ud1.1:2.13That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.”
ud1.1:3.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
ud1.1:4.1“When things become clear
ud1.1:4.2to the keen, meditating brahmin,
ud1.1:4.3his doubts are dispelled,
ud1.1:4.4since he understands each thing and its cause.”
