ud1.3:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 1.3

ud1.3:0.2Upon Awakening (3rd)

ud1.3:1.1So I have heard.

ud1.3:1.2At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the root of the tree of awakening on the bank of the Nerañjarā River.

ud1.3:1.3There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom.

ud1.3:1.4When seven days had passed, the Buddha emerged from that state of immersion. In the last watch, he carefully applied the mind to dependent origination, going both with and against the grain:

ud1.3:2.1“So, when this exists, this comes to be; due to the arising of this, this arises.

ud1.3:2.2When this doesn’t exist, this doesn’t come to be; due to the cessation of this, this ceases. That is:

ud1.3:2.3Ignorance is a requirement for choices.

ud1.3:2.4Choices are a requirement for consciousness.

ud1.3:2.5Consciousness is a requirement for name and form.

ud1.3:2.6Name and form are requirements for the six sense fields.

ud1.3:2.7The six sense fields are requirements for contact.

ud1.3:2.8Contact is a requirement for feeling.

ud1.3:2.9Feeling is a requirement for craving.

ud1.3:2.10Craving is a requirement for grasping.

ud1.3:2.11Grasping is a requirement for continued existence.

ud1.3:2.12Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth.

ud1.3:2.13Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

ud1.3:2.14That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

ud1.3:3.1When ignorance fades away and ceases no residue left behind, choices cease.

ud1.3:3.2When choices cease, consciousness ceases.

ud1.3:3.3When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.

ud1.3:3.4When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.

ud1.3:3.5When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases.

ud1.3:3.6When contact ceases, feeling ceases.

ud1.3:3.7When feeling ceases, craving ceases.

ud1.3:3.8When craving ceases, grasping ceases.

ud1.3:3.9When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

ud1.3:3.10When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

ud1.3:3.11When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

ud1.3:3.12That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

ud1.3:4.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ud1.3:5.1“When things become clear

ud1.3:5.2to the keen, meditating brahmin,

ud1.3:5.3he remains, scattering Māra’s army,

ud1.3:5.4as the sun lights up the sky.”
