ud1.7:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 1.7

ud1.7:0.2At Ajakalāpaka

ud1.7:1.1So I have heard.

ud1.7:1.2At one time the Buddha was staying in Pāvā at the Ajakalāpaka Shrine, the haunt of the native spirit Ajakalāpaka.

ud1.7:1.3Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down.

ud1.7:1.4Then Ajakalāpaka, wanting to make the Buddha feel fear, terror, and goosebumps, approached him, and while not far away yelled three times, “Havoc and heck!” Then he added,

ud1.7:1.5“Now that’s a goblin for you, ascetic!”

ud1.7:2.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ud1.7:3.1“When a brahmin gets over

ud1.7:3.2their own issues,

ud1.7:3.3they transcend this goblin

ud1.7:3.4and his havoc.”
