ud3.1:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 3.1
ud3.1:0.2Born of the Fruits of Deeds
ud3.1:1.1So I have heard.
ud3.1:1.2At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
ud3.1:1.3Now, at that time a certain mendicant was sitting not far from the Buddha, cross-legged, with his body straight. As a result of past deeds, he suffered painful, sharp, severe, and acute feelings, which he endured unbothered, with mindfulness and awareness.
ud3.1:2.1The Buddha saw him meditating and enduring that pain.
ud3.1:3.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
ud3.1:4.1“A mendicant who has left all deeds behind,
ud3.1:4.2shaking off the dust of past deeds,
ud3.1:4.3unselfish, steady, unaffected,
ud3.1:4.4has no need to complain.”
