ud8.10:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 8.10

ud8.10:0.2Dabba (2nd)

ud8.10:1.1So I have heard.

ud8.10:1.2At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

ud8.10:1.3There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

ud8.10:1.4“Mendicants!”

ud8.10:1.5“Venerable sir,” they replied.

ud8.10:1.6The Buddha said this:

ud8.10:2.1“Mendicants, when Dabba the Mallian rose into the air and, sitting cross-legged in midair, entered and withdrew from the fire element before becoming fully quenched, his body burning and combusting left neither ashes nor soot to be found.

ud8.10:2.2It’s like when ghee or oil blaze and burn, and neither ashes nor soot are found.

ud8.10:2.3In the same way, when Dabba the Mallian rose into the air and, sitting cross-legged in midair, entered and withdrew from the fire element before becoming fully quenched, his body burning and combusting left neither ashes nor soot to be found.”

ud8.10:3.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ud8.10:4.1“Just as the glow of iron struck

ud8.10:4.2by a hammer in the fire of Jātaveda

ud8.10:4.3gradually dissipates,

ud8.10:4.4its destiny unknown;

ud8.10:5.1in the same way, for the rightly released,

ud8.10:5.2who have crossed the flood of sensual bonds,

ud8.10:5.3there is no destination to describe—

ud8.10:5.4they have found unshakable happiness.”

ud8.10:9.5The Heartfelt Sayings are finished.
