ud8.4:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 8.4
ud8.4:0.2About Extinguishment (4th)
ud8.4:1.1So I have heard.
ud8.4:1.2At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
ud8.4:1.3Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment.
ud8.4:1.4And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.
ud8.4:2.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
ud8.4:3.1“For the dependent there is quivering. For the independent there’s no quivering.
ud8.4:3.2When there’s no quivering there is tranquility.
ud8.4:3.3When there is tranquility there’s no inclination.
ud8.4:3.4When there’s no inclination, there’s no coming and going.
ud8.4:3.5When there’s no coming and going, there’s no passing away and reappearing.
ud8.4:3.6When there’s no passing away and reappearing there’s no this life or the next or between the two.
ud8.4:3.7Just this is the end of suffering.”
