Torah, Prophets and Writings

Torah, Prophets and Writings

Tanakh takes its Hebrew name from the initials of its three divisions. Torah opens the collection with the five books from Genesis through Deuteronomy. Nevi’im, the Prophets, includes narrative books as well as collections of prophetic speech. Ketuvim, the Writings, brings together psalms, wisdom literature, festival scrolls and other works. These divisions give the collection a distinctive order and place books in company that can differ from a Christian Old Testament.

Languages and transmission

The books were composed and transmitted across many generations. Most of the text is Hebrew, with passages in Aramaic, including portions of Daniel and Ezra. The written signs for vowels and accents in the medieval manuscript tradition preserve information about how the consonantal text was read. These marks have a place in the history of transmission alongside the words they accompany.

Editions in this library

The English edition here is the Jewish Publication Society translation published in 1917. Its choice of vocabulary and its arrangement represent a particular Jewish publishing project in the English-speaking world. The Hebrew edition is the Unicode/XML Leningrad Codex transcription. A printed translation and a modern digital representation of a manuscript each give access to the collection through a different historical witness.
