The Babylonian Talmud takes shape
c. 500 CE
Generations of rabbinic discussion in Babylonia developed around the Mishnah. These debates, together with stories, ethical reflection, and interpretation, became the Babylonian Talmud. Its layered form preserves disagreement as well as rulings and became a central resource for later Jewish learning.
Why it matters
The Talmud shows how interpretation becomes a continuing communal practice, connecting ancient teachings to questions that arise in new circumstances and generations.
