Hamburg’s Reform congregation begins services
1818 CE
A new Jewish congregation in Hamburg began worship in rented premises, introducing changes such as German sermons and choral music. These practices expressed an effort to reshape communal religious life in modern society. The later Poolstraße building should not be confused with the original meeting place.

The congregation offers a concrete example of modern Jewish religious change and of debates about language, worship, and participation in surrounding society.
