Judah ha-Nasi’s circle compiles the Mishnah
c. 200 CE
The Mishnah brought together rabbinic teachings and discussions in a collection associated with Judah ha-Nasi. Its organization of inherited rulings became a foundation for later rabbinic debate. The collection represents a stage in an ongoing interpretive tradition, rather than a replacement for biblical scripture.
Why it matters
Readers meet the distinction between the written Bible and the developing body of rabbinic interpretation that guides many forms of Jewish practice.
