iti103:0.1So It Was Said 103

iti103:0.2The Book of the Fours

iti103:0.3The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

iti103:0.4Ascetics and Brahmins

iti103:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti103:2.1“Mendicants, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

iti103:2.2I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight in this very life.

iti103:3.1There are ascetics and brahmins who truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

iti103:3.2I regard them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.”

iti103:3.3The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti103:3.4On this it is said:

iti103:4.1“There are those who don’t understand suffering

iti103:4.2and suffering’s cause,

iti103:4.3and where all suffering

iti103:4.4cease with no residue left behind.

iti103:4.5And they do not know the path

iti103:4.6that leads to the stilling of suffering.

iti103:5.1They lack the heart’s release,

iti103:5.2as well as the release by wisdom.

iti103:5.3Unable to make an end,

iti103:5.4they continue to be reborn and grow old.

iti103:6.1But there are those who understand suffering

iti103:6.2and suffering’s cause,

iti103:6.3and where all suffering

iti103:6.4cease with no residue left behind.

iti103:6.5And they understand the path

iti103:6.6that leads to the stilling of suffering.

iti103:7.1They’re endowed with the heart’s release,

iti103:7.2as well as the release by wisdom.

iti103:7.3Able to make an end,

iti103:7.4they don’t continue to be reborn and grow old.”

iti103:8.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
