iti102:0.2The Book of the Fours

iti102:0.3The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

iti102:0.4The Ending of Defilements

iti102:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti102:2.1“Mendicants, I say that the ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see.

iti102:2.2For one who knows and sees what?

iti102:2.3The ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

iti102:2.4The ending of the defilements is for one who knows and sees this.”

iti102:2.5The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti102:2.6On this it is said:

iti102:3.1“As a trainee trains,

iti102:3.2following the straight road,

iti102:3.3first they know about ending;

iti102:3.4enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.

iti102:4.1Then to one freed through enlightenment

iti102:4.2the knowledge of ending arises,

iti102:4.3the supreme knowledge of freedom,

iti102:4.4with the ending of the fetters.

iti102:5.1Not by the lazy,

iti102:5.2or by fools who don’t understand

iti102:5.3may this be realized—extinguishment,

iti102:5.4the release from all ties.”

iti102:6.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
