iti110:0.2The Book of the Fours

iti110:0.3The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

iti110:0.4Walking

iti110:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti110:2.1“Mendicants, suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.

iti110:2.2They tolerate it and don’t give it up, dispel it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a mendicant is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when walking.

iti110:3.1Suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while standing …

iti110:4.1sitting …

iti110:5.1or when lying down while awake.

iti110:5.2They tolerate it and don’t give it up, dispel it, eliminate it, and obliterate it.

iti110:5.3Such a mendicant is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when lying down while awake.

iti110:6.1Suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.

iti110:6.2They don’t tolerate them, but give them up, dispel them, eliminate them, and obliterate them.

iti110:6.3Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and resolute’ when walking.

iti110:7.1Suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while standing …

iti110:8.1sitting …

iti110:9.1or when lying down while awake.

iti110:9.2They don’t tolerate it, but give it up, dispel it, eliminate it, and obliterate it.

iti110:9.3Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and resolute’ when lying down while awake.”

iti110:9.4The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti110:9.5On this it is said:

iti110:10.1“Whether walking or standing,

iti110:10.2sitting or lying down,

iti110:10.3one who thinks a bad thought

iti110:10.4to do with the domestic life

iti110:11.1is practicing the wrong way,

iti110:11.2lost among things that delude;

iti110:11.3such a mendicant is incapable

iti110:11.4of experiencing the highest awakening.

iti110:12.1But one who, whether standing or walking,

iti110:12.2sitting or lying down,

iti110:12.3has calmed their thoughts,

iti110:12.4loving peace of mind;

iti110:12.5such a mendicant is capable

iti110:12.6of experiencing the highest awakening.”

iti110:13.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
