iti111:0.1So It Was Said 111

iti111:0.2The Book of the Fours

iti111:0.3The Chapter on the Brahmin’s Offering of the Teaching

iti111:0.4Accomplishment in Ethics

iti111:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti111:2.1“Mendicants, live by the ethical precepts and the monastic code. Live restrained in the monastic code, conducting yourselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, keep the rules you’ve undertaken.

iti111:3.1When you’ve done this, what more is there to do?

iti111:4.1Suppose a mendicant has got rid of desire and ill will while walking, and has given up dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Their energy is roused up and unflagging, their mindfulness is established and lucid, their body is tranquil and undisturbed, and their mind is immersed and unified in samādhi.

iti111:4.2Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and resolute’ when walking.

iti111:5.1Suppose a mendicant has got rid of desire and ill will while standing …

iti111:6.1sitting …

iti111:7.1or when lying down while awake.

iti111:7.2Such a mendicant is said to be ‘keen and prudent, always energetic and resolute’ when lying down while awake.”

iti111:7.3The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti111:7.4On this it is said:

iti111:8.1“Carefully walking, carefully standing,

iti111:8.2carefully sitting, carefully lying;

iti111:8.3a mendicant carefully bends their limbs,

iti111:8.4and carefully extends them.

iti111:9.1Above, below, all round,

iti111:9.2as far as the planet extends;

iti111:9.3they scrutinize the rise and fall

iti111:9.4of phenomena such as the aggregates.

iti111:10.1Meditating diligently like this,

iti111:10.2peaceful, not restless,

iti111:10.3training in what leads to serenity of heart,

iti111:10.4always staying mindful;

iti111:10.5they call that sort of mendicant

iti111:10.6‘always determined’.”

iti111:11.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
