iti28:0.3Chapter One

iti28:0.4Living in Suffering

iti28:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti28:2.1“Mendicants, when a mendicant has two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—

iti28:2.2and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.

iti28:2.3What two?

iti28:2.4Not guarding the sense doors and eating too much.

iti28:2.5When a mendicant possesses these two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—

iti28:2.6and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.”

iti28:2.7The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti28:2.8On this it is said:

iti28:3.1“Eye, ear, nose,

iti28:3.2tongue, body, and likewise mind:

iti28:3.3a mendicant who leaves these

iti28:3.4sense doors unguarded—

iti28:4.1immoderate in eating,

iti28:4.2sense faculties unrestrained—

iti28:4.3reaps suffering

iti28:4.4both physical and mental.

iti28:5.1Burning in body,

iti28:5.2burning in mind,

iti28:5.3by day or by night

iti28:5.4such a person lives in suffering.”

iti28:6.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
