iti35:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti35:2.1“Mendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of fawning or flattering people, nor for the benefit of possessions, honor, or popularity, nor thinking, ‘So let people know about me!’

iti35:2.2This spiritual life is lived for the sake of restraint and giving up.”

iti35:2.3The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti35:2.4On this it is said:

iti35:3.1“The Buddha taught the spiritual life

iti35:3.2not because of legends,

iti35:3.3but for the sake of restraint and giving up,

iti35:3.4and because its objective is extinguishment.
