iti44:0.1So It Was Said 44

iti44:0.2The Book of the Twos

iti44:0.3Chapter Two

iti44:0.4Elements of Extinguishment

iti44:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti44:2.1“There are, mendicants, these two elements of extinguishment.

iti44:2.2What two?

iti44:2.3The element of extinguishment with residue, and the element of extinguishment with no residue.

iti44:3.1And what is the element of extinguishment with residue?

iti44:3.2It’s when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their heart’s goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment.

iti44:3.3Their five sense faculties still remain. So long as their senses have not gone they continue to experience the agreeable and disagreeable, to feel pleasure and pain.

iti44:3.4The ending of greed, hate, and delusion in them

iti44:3.5is called the element of extinguishment with residue.

iti44:4.1And what is the element of extinguishment with no residue?

iti44:4.2It’s when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their heart’s goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment.

iti44:4.3For them, everything that’s felt, being no longer relished, will become cool right here.

iti44:4.4This is called the element of extinguishment with no residue.

iti44:4.5These are the two elements of extinguishment.”

iti44:4.6The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti44:4.7On this it is said:

iti44:5.1“These two elements of extinguishment have been revealed

iti44:5.2by the Clear-eyed One, the unattached, the unaffected.

iti44:5.3One element pertains to this life—

iti44:5.4that with residue though the leash to existence has ended;

iti44:5.5and that with no residue, which pertains to what follows this life,

iti44:5.6where all states of existence cease.

iti44:6.1Those who have fully understood the unconditioned state—

iti44:6.2their minds freed, the leash to existence ended—

iti44:6.3attained to the heart of the Dhamma, they delight in ending,

iti44:6.4the unaffected ones have given up all states of existence.”

iti44:7.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
