ud1.2:0.1Heartfelt Sayings 1.2

ud1.2:0.2Upon Awakening (2nd)

ud1.2:1.1So I have heard.

ud1.2:1.2At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in Uruvelā at the root of the tree of awakening on the bank of the Nerañjarā River.

ud1.2:1.3There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom.

ud1.2:1.4When seven days had passed, the Buddha emerged from that state of immersion. In the second part of the night, he carefully applied the mind to dependent origination, going against the grain:

ud1.2:2.1“So, when this doesn’t exist, this doesn’t come to be; due to the cessation of this, this ceases. That is:

ud1.2:2.2When ignorance ceases, choices cease.

ud1.2:2.3When choices cease, consciousness ceases.

ud1.2:2.4When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.

ud1.2:2.5When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.

ud1.2:2.6When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases.

ud1.2:2.7When contact ceases, feeling ceases.

ud1.2:2.8When feeling ceases, craving ceases.

ud1.2:2.9When craving ceases, grasping ceases.

ud1.2:2.10When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

ud1.2:2.11When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

ud1.2:2.12When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

ud1.2:2.13That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”

ud1.2:3.1Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ud1.2:4.1“When things become clear

ud1.2:4.2to the keen, meditating brahmin,

ud1.2:4.3his doubts are dispelled,

ud1.2:4.4since he’s known the end of conditions.”
