iti31:0.1So It Was Said 31

iti31:0.2The Book of the Twos

iti31:0.3Chapter One

iti31:0.4Not Mortifying

iti31:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti31:2.1“These two things, mendicants, are not mortifying.

iti31:2.2What two?

iti31:2.3It’s when someone has done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has not done bad things, violence and sin.

iti31:2.4Thinking, ‘I have done good things’, they’re not mortified. Thinking, ‘I haven’t done bad things’, they’re not mortified.

iti31:2.5These are the two things that are not mortifying.”

iti31:2.6The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti31:2.7On this it is said:

iti31:3.1“Having given up bad conduct

iti31:3.2by way of body,

iti31:3.3speech, and mind,

iti31:3.4and whatever else is corrupt;

iti31:4.1not having done bad deeds,

iti31:4.2and having done many good,

iti31:4.3when their body breaks up, that wise person

iti31:4.4is reborn in heaven.”

iti31:5.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
