iti42:0.1So It Was Said 42

iti42:0.2The Book of the Twos

iti42:0.3Chapter Two

iti42:0.4Bright Things

iti42:1.1This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

iti42:2.1“These two bright things, mendicants, protect the world.

iti42:2.2What two?

iti42:2.3Conscience and prudence.

iti42:2.4If these two bright things did not protect the world, there would be no recognition of the status of mother, aunts, or wives and partners of tutors and respected people.

iti42:2.5The world would become dissolute, like goats and sheep, chickens and pigs, and hounds and jackals.

iti42:2.6But because the two bright things protect the world, there is recognition of the status of mother, aunts, and wives and partners of tutors and respected people.”

iti42:2.7The Buddha spoke this matter.

iti42:2.8On this it is said:

iti42:3.1“Those in whom conscience and prudence

iti42:3.2are never found at all,

iti42:3.3have lost their bright roots,

iti42:3.4and fare on in birth and death.

iti42:4.1Those in whom conscience and prudence

iti42:4.2are always rightly established,

iti42:4.3thrive in the spiritual life;

iti42:4.4being at peace, they will not be reborn again.”

iti42:5.1This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
